Kudukkathupara is a small hill station in Kollam district of Kerala state. It’s located inside the Anchal Aanakkulam forest range of Channapetta.  We started our trip from Trivandrum. From Trivandrum we need to travel through Pothencode – ayoor – Anchal – channapettah to reach Anakulam. From there, it’s almost 2 km off-roading through the jungle to reach the destination. Now Kudukkathupara became an eco-tourism spot and it’s managed by Kerala tourism department.

On the way, we can see a sacred grove [Kudukkathukavu] inside the jungle with a lot of red silky clothes scattered all over the trees.

There is a rock looks like a Caterpillar, but it’s called  ‘Whale Rock’, at the entrance to the Kudukkathpara stairs and from here the climbing starts. Although the climbing is a bit tiring, it’s worth it once we reach the top.

The main rock is located almost 840 meters above sea level. The maximum limit of accessibility is only 740 meters high. Kudukkathupara is a combination of 3 huge rock with a narrow gap in between and the highest rock is about 840 ft. tall which we can’t climb but I am sure the view from the top will be magnificent. We can see some parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala districts such as Kollam, Trivandrum, Pathanamthitta from the top station.

There are almost 360 steps to the top and we can see many caves on the way. One of the main caves is known as Whiteman’s cave as it’s said once a plane crashed here and the pilot-a German hid inside the cave during World War II. This cave can accommodate 5 people simply without direct contact from the sunlight and rain. There is another rock called kitchen rock which was used for preparing food by tourists in the past.

As we know The Western Ghats is one of the major repositories of medicinal plants with varied flora, fauna and landscapes. Kudukkathpara is also blessed with amazing biodiversity. Many rare medicinal plants are growing here. One of the rare medicinal herbs found here in the evergreen forest is ‘Arogyapacha’.

Kudukkathupara is such a calm and quiet place to spend a half day. The Panoramic view from the rock is breathtaking and magnificent. Trekkers will love the place. You can reach the place by jeep, motorbike or car.
